Spartanburg-based Milliken & Co. will close down its 200-employee Judson Plant in Greenville starting in April in an effort to “reposition manufacturing assets and modernize operations for continued growth,” according to the company.
The plant – which produces yarn for other Milliken facilities – is located on 24.4 acres at 701 Easley Bridge Road, according to Greenville County property records. Milliken did not respond to questions about plans for the facility in time for publishing.
The company expects to place a “significant” number of associates at one of Milliken’s six local plants located within 30 miles of Greenville. The consolidation will begin in April and is expected to be complete in fall.
“Judson associates will have priority consideration and a right of first refusal on any job openings across the company,” according to a news release. “Milliken will work with our staffing agency partners on outplacement for associates that are unable to transfer to other Milliken sites.”
The company said the Judson decision would allow the company to maximize operational efficiencies and strengthen its competitive position.
Founded in 1865, Milliken has 17 locations in the Upstate and nine in Georgia that employ 3,475 people. The company said it plans to invest in new equipment at its Holland Plant in Gainesville, Ga., and its Cedar Hill Plant in Jonesville, S.C.
