BMW’s latest sport-utility vehicle, the XM, has started production at BMW Manufacturing in Greer.
The new SUV joins the X5, X6 and X7 on the same assembly line. This is the first high-performance car with an electrified powertrain from BMW. The vehicle will reach dealerships in spring 2023.
The powertrain involves a V-8 with powerful electric motors and a plug-in system for extended range.
“The modern, future-oriented design and powerful performance of the BMW XM has generated a lot of enthusiasm,” said Robert Engelhorn, president and CEO of BMW Manufacturing.
This will be the first original vehicle built for the BMW M division since the original M1, which debuted more than 40 years ago. The vehicle’s main markets will be the U.S., China and the Middle East.
BMW Manufacturing had a remarkable year in 2022. The plant celebrated its 30th anniversary, the opening of a training center and logistics center and the construction of a new metal stamping plant. It recently opened a new vehicle accessories center, as well.
It also announced a $1.7 billion investment in electric vehicles, which will see production in Greer.
