BMW’s U.S. business declined slightly in January, but sales of its X models produced in Spartanburg County continued to rise.
BMW of North America LLC on Wednesday reported it sold 21,219 vehicles during the past month, a one-half percent decrease compared with 21,230 in January 2016.
Sales of X models assembled in the Upstate, including the X3, X4, X5, and X6, increased more than 35 percent to 7,070 vehicles in January, compared with 5,233 during the same month of the prior year.
“The increased availability of the highly popular BMW X models is paying off as our X model U.S. sales in January topped the all-important 50 percent mark for the second month in a row,” said Ludwig Willisch, president and CEO, BMW of North America, in a statement. “Now, with February here, we are very much looking forward to the launch of our brilliant next generation 5 Series, only two weeks away.”
X3 sales increased nearly 58 percent to 3,154 units in January, compared with 2,002 units during same month of the previous year.
Sales of the X4 decreased almost 20 percent to 211 units during the month, down from 262 in January 2016.
X5 sales increased almost 27 percent to 3,276 units in January, compared with 2,584 during the same month a year ago.
Sales of the X6 increased more than 11 percent to 429 units during the past month, compared with 285 during the previous January.
The company said sales of its brand vehicles, which declined almost 10 percent in 2016, increased slightly in January to 18,109 vehicles, compared with 18,082 during the same month of the previous year.
Sales of BMW’s MINI brand decreased 4 percent to 3,110 vehicles during the month, compared with 3,238 in January 2016.
