The Handlebar, a Greenville concert venue known for attracting both local and national musicians, announced today on Facebook and its website that it will be closing its location at 304 E. Stone Ave. on April 30.
The listening room, pub and café, said that it will re-open on September 15 in an undisclosed new location.
The Handlebar opened in a former auto-body shop on Stone Avenue in spring of 2001, following a nine-month hiatus after leaving its first location, a 100-year-old textile mill on Mills Avenue, a sprawling building now converted to condominiums.
The announcement said that “between now and then, The Handlebar plans to pack so much talent and fun into its schedule that people will be talking about it until the unveiling of a new Handlebar.”
Charles Tremonti, a 20 percent owner of The Handlebar, has told the Journal that he doesn’t think that co-owners John and Kathy Jeter are allowed to move without approval of a judge, since The Handlebar is currently in bankruptcy. Tremonti says the couple, who also own a 20 percent stake in The Handlebar, owes him and other partners two years of unpaid rent, and says the move is to try to avoid paying that.
