A supermarket may once again occupy the vacant space at the North Main shopping center where the BI-LO shut down.
Alberto Alvarez, who is developing the property, said in addition to the supermarket he plans to add a gas station and pharmacy.
“I plan to make it a beautiful place,” he said.
According to Alvarez, the supermarket will serve the community where many elderly and low-income families live. The space has been vacant since the supermarket known in the neighborhood as the “Baby BI-LO” closed earlier this year.
The new supermarket will be independent from chain stores and occupy about 17,000 square feet, he said.
Alvarez is doing plumbing, electrical, ventilation and cosmetic work inside the building, he said, but isn’t sure exactly when the work will be completed.
Other shops such as a hair salon and Chinese restaurant are located in the rest of the complex.
Alvarez is taking over ownership of the property, he said.
