A local adoption agency, Flourish Adoption Ministries, has opened a used book store in its office as a way to create outreach into the community.
Flourish is located in the Pettigru Historic District at 403 Pettigru St. near downtown Greenville. It was founded in 2015.
Flourish Bookstore opened July 7 in its former conference room. In its front lobby, the staff has set up a few shelves for children’s books.
“It’s an easy way to get involved in the adoption world. If you don’t feel like you’re at a place where you want to adopt or feel called to adopt, it’s a very easy way for people to donate, to buy a book,” said adoption services coordinator Meghan Presley. “It’s a great way to support.”
The idea grew from a discussion between the team that if they could do anything else, they would own a coffee shop or book store. Roughly six months ago, they realized it would be feasible with little to no overhead if the books were all donated. This way, it could function as an additional stream of revenue with all of the proceeds going back into the agency.
The five-person team then reached out for help.
“My husband is a teacher, and he got his whole school to donate. It was right at 1,000 [books],” said outreach coordinator Becca Wise.
For those looking to drop by and either purchase or donate a book, it is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
