BMW’s U.S. sales decreased 12.2 percent in April

Sales of one BMW model produced in Spartanburg County — the X3 — increased in April, but the German automaker’s U.S. business declined 12.2 percent during the month.

BMW of North America reported Tuesday it sold 26,105 vehicles in April, compared with 29,747 during the same month of 2016.

For the year, the company said its sales are down 2.8 percent to 108,038 vehicles, compared with 111,199 during the first four months of the previous year.

“For BMW, tight supply of key models had a strong effect in April,” said Bernhard Kuhnt, president and CEO of BMW of North America, in a statement. “Our very popular new 5 Series is still ramping up production as the latest variants are making their way to our dealerships. Our Sports Activity Vehicles are still in high demand with the X1 and X3 turning in good results.”

X3 sales increased 32.3 percent to 3,204 units during the month, compared to 2,422 during the previous April. Since January, the company has sold 16,773 X3s, a 32.8 percent increase compared with 12,633 during the same period of 2016.

Sales of the three other models produced at Spartanburg County-based BMW Manufacturing Co. — the X4, X5, and X6 — decreased during the month.

X4 sales fell 20.1 percent to 291 units, compared with 364 in April 2016. Year-to-date, X4 sales are down 35.8 percent to 1,179 units, compared with 1,837 during the same period of the prior year.

Sales of the X5 in April stood at 3,400 units, a 9.8 percent decrease compared with 3,771 during the same month a year ago. X5 sales have increased 12 percent since the start of the year to 15,472 units, compared with 13,814 during the first four months of 2016.

X6 sales decreased 7.7 percent during the month to 561 units, compared with 608 in April of the previous year. For the year, X6 sales have fallen 7.2 percent to 2,089 units, compared with 2,252 during the same span of the prior year.

As a whole, BMW’s light trucks division brand sales increased 4.1 percent in April and are up by 16.3 percent for the year.

Meanwhile, the company reported its BMW brand sales fell 9.3 percent for the month and are down 1.3 percent for the year.

Its MINI brand sales decreased 27.4 percent in April and 12.2 percent for the first four months of 2017.
