Bon Secours, Mercy Health announce name, leadership of merged systems

John Starcher

Once the merger between Bon Secours Health System, the parent company of Bon Secours St. Francis Health System, and Mercy Health is finalized in the fall, the new company will be known as Bon Secours Mercy Health.

John M. Starcher Jr., CEO of Mercy Health, will serve as president and CEO of the new organization, according to a press release.

Bon Secours President and CEO Rich Statuto will continue to serve Bon Secours Mercy Health as an advisor for the next year, primarily focused on strategic growth and innovation. He will retire in 2019.

The announcement does not affect the leadership at Bon Secours St. Francis, which operates two hospitals in Greenville. Craig McCoy will remain CEO there.

“We will expand our services and programs, provide greater access in our markets to help, and serve more people,” Starcher said. “We will be able to do even more for people who are poor, dying, or underserved, providing almost $2 million each day in community benefit as a combined entity.”

Bon Secours Health System is a not-for-profit Catholic health system sponsored by Bon Secours Ministries and founded by the Sisters of Bon Secours. It owns, operates, or joint ventures 20 hospitals and 27 post-acute care facilities or agencies, including skilled nursing facilities, home care hospice services, and assisted living facilities.

Mercy Health is the largest health system in Ohio and among the top five employers in the state, with more than 35,000 employees serving communities throughout Ohio and Kentucky. Mercy Health includes assets of $6.8 billion and nearly 500 care facilities, including 23 hospitals and 26 post-acute care facilities including senior living communities, hospice programs, and home health agencies.

Because both systems have a strong brand and name recognition in their communities, current names and brands will continue to be represented in signage, uniforms, and badges, officials said.

The partnership is not expected to affect case at local facilities and no money will change hands in the deal, the release said.

Bon Secours Mercy Health will operate under the governance of one board of directors, led by Chris Allen, who currently serves as chair of the Bon Secours board of trustees. Katherine Vestal, current chair of the Mercy Health board, will serve as vice chair.
