Bridge City Coffee launches drive-thru June 29

Bridge City Coffee is opening its drive-thru on Saturday, June 29, making it currently the only third-wave coffee shop in Greenville to do so.

The third wave of coffee is a post-Starbucks movement dedicated to producing high-quality coffee as an artisanal food, like wine, rather than a commodity. Doing so requires more time and attention than a typical drive-thru operation can offer.

Bridge City Coffee co-owners Jon Quigg and Greg Ward believe they have figured out how to marry convenience and quality.

Entering its third year in the local roasting scene, Bridge City Coffee opened its first storefront location at 1520 Wade Hampton Blvd. in Greenville in January. Opening the drive-thru component has been the goal for Quigg and Ward from the beginning, recognizing that the specialty coffee market has been very resistant to and essentially non-existent in the drive-thru world.

“Delivering a high quality product quickly is a unique challenge and we wanted to take the time to figure out how to do it right,” Ward said. “We had a long internal debate between the two of us if we could pull this off well enough to put our stamp on it. The immediate challenge was figuring out how to make specialty coffee fast enough for a drive-thru without compromising one inch of our standards.”

They hope to accomplish that by having a second, full-service espresso setup that will be used by the drive-thru only so there will be no competition with in-store service. The grinder speed is quicker, and built-in scales in the espresso machine eliminate an extra step.

The grand opening event celebrating the drive-thru on June 29 will include hourly giveaways ranging from small prizes to free coffee for a year, golden tickets in bags of coffee, live music, and roasting demonstrations.

The drive-thru hours of operation are Monday-Friday 6:30 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
