After 14 years, downtown hideaway The Velo Fellow has announced its intent to close Dec. 8. The business made the announcement on social media Nov. 10.
“It’s with a very heavy and broken heart that we must announce that the sun is finally setting on the Velo Fellow,” the post said.
The post cited the skyrocketing costs of liquor liability insurance and the high cost of rent as its reason for closing. Liability insurance costs have led to the closing or restructuring of multiple bars and restaurants in the past year.
“Sadly, over the years we have started to lose many of them, but it’s these institutions that give our community its individual sense of identity and that special ‘je ne sais quoi’ that makes our city unique and special. No one wants to exist in a world solely made up of corporate chains/entities and big box stores,” the post added.
No word yet as to what may enter the space. Its owners could not immediately be reached for comment.
The Velo Fellow will remain open for the next four weeks with the promise of shows and events still to come. It is located at 1 Augusta St. No. 126, downstairs from Mellow Mushroom and Nic & Norman’s.
