Two Upstate cycling manufacturers and a group of local investors have acquired a German carbon rim manufacturer and are moving production equipment to Spartanburg County.
Greenville’s Boyd Cycling joined Cardinal Cycling Group to acquire Munich Composites to form Munich Composites SC.
Equipment from the company used to make braided carbon fiber rims is being shipped to the U.S. and will be set up at Cardinal Cycling Group’s Landrum facility, according to Nicole Johnson, co-founder of Boyd Cycling.
“We’re trying to create a cluster of cycling manufacturing here in the Upstate,” Johnson said.
She added the move is also motivated, in part, by a desire to strengthen domestic manufacturing capacity and thus mitigate risks to markets and supply chains brought on by global geopolitical uncertainty.
Johnson and her husband, Boyd, founded Boyd Cycling in 2009 and launched Olive Manufacturing Group in 2023.
Cardinal Cycling Group, which owns Time Bicycles and Detroit Bikes, has an advanced manufacturing facility in Landrum in northern Spartanburg County adjacent to the future Saluda Grade Trail.
