Spartanburg’s history and a major figure from that history will be honored by the naming of a new 152-room hotel being developed by The Johnson Group as part of its roughly $800 million Project Core revitalizing the Hub City’s downtown.
Details about The Morgan Hotel, a Curio Collection by Hilton property, were unveiled Aug. 11 at the hotel’s West Main Street site overlooking Morgan Square.
Hilton President and CEO Chris Nassetta said his company’s long and successful partnership with the Johnson Family and The Johnson Group, coupled with Spartanburg’s deep history and sense of identity made The Morgan Hotel project a natural fit for the Hilton brand.
Nassetta said it was gratifying to stand within the emerging structure of The Morgan Hotel and see how it connects to the much larger effort reshaping downtown Spartanburg.
“It’s wonderful to see … what this will turn into — concrete, steel, bricks, glass — to turn into a beautiful hotel,” he said. “But what’s more important is that this will become another engine of opportunity in the city of Spartanburg.”
The Morgan Hotel will feature 152 guest rooms, ground floor dining, a rooftop bar and a 6,000-square-foot ballroom.
Geordy Johnson, CEO of The Johnson Group, said the hotel will form another vital link in the string of projects his company is developing to revitalize Spartanburg’s urban heart.
The first phase to be completed was Fifth Third Park, a new minor league baseball stadium and events venue that helped energize Spartanburg’s recent renaissance. In addition to The Morgan Hotel, Project Core involves:
- 245 W. Main St.: The first downtown Spartanburg office building in more than 20 years featuring 150,000 square feet of Class A office space and ground floor retail.
- 185 W. Main St.: Mixed-use project with 97,000 square feet of office and commercial space, including ground-floor retail space
- Broad Street residential: A 181-unit multifamily residential project in the heart of a walkable downtown
The combination of projects is expected to bring more than 1,000 daytime office workers, 300 residents and an estimated 40,000 annual hotel guests to downtown.
