Following a fan vote cast last fall, the Upstate’s new pre-professional women’s soccer team will be called the Greenville Liberty, representatives from the Greenville Triumph Soccer Club announced March 24.
“We felt strongly that the women’s brand deserved a look of its own to inspire women, girls [and] everyone in the Upstate,” said Triumph Vice Chairman and Chief Brand Officer Doug Erwin. “We started a campaign that began with community feedback and that was something we relied on early on in the Triumph process. It was important to make people feel a part of this because this is a team for the Upstate. We wanted something that people of the community felt they could call their own.”
“The Liberty” not only garnered the most votes among finalists but also was the most-suggested name, Erwin said.
“With the talent level of players we have coming in and the teams’ brand announcement, the excitement surrounding our new women’s team continues to grow as the inaugural season nears,” said Julie Carlson, Greenville Liberty’s head coach and technical director. “Our players and staff are ‘super-pumped’ about uniting all the components of this program into one.”
The team’s colors and crest feature a Yellow Jasmine, South Carolina’s state flower.
The team, which has signed 24 players between the ages of 16 to 29, will kick off its season in Charlotte on May 15 against Charlotte Independence. Its first home match will be at 7 p.m. on May 20 against NC Courage U23 at Legacy Early College at 900 Woodside Avenue in Greenville.
The Liberty will also face off against SC Bantums in an exhibition match on May 8 at 3 p.m. at Legacy Early College.
