After several unsuccessful attempts to secure a lead sponsor and lackluster fundraising results, Reedy Point, a proposed public tourism resource center and gathering place concept in downtown Greenville has been canceled.
Plans had been designed for the project that was to include an interactive visitor center, business and meeting spaces, event venue, pocket parks and public spaces. City leaders had been discussing the concept of the multipurpose tourism complex bordering the Reedy River at the entrance to the Swamp Rabbit Trail since 2010, and the project went through several iterations under the names of Reedy Square and Dream Big Greenville.
The 1.2-acre parcel of land set aside at 301 River St. for the project will revert back to Greenville County ownership. In a letter from the Reedy Point board of directors, it was urged that proponents of the project “continue to advocate for the site to be used as public green space, as a connection point, as a place that welcomes everyone in an area surrounded by enormous private development.”
