The People’s Tap in downtown Greenville will close at the end of June.
The women-owned taproom announced the closure on social media on June 16, citing issues obtaining appropriate liquor liability insurance coverage. The People’s Tap’s final day in operation will be June 30.
“While we were able to obtain liquor liability insurance after our issues with renewal this past March, what we found was meant to be a short-term solution while we looked for more appropriate coverage,” the post said. “Unfortunately, we are unable to find a suitable long-term coverage option, and as a result, we can no longer continue operations.”
Julia Belcher and Jennifer Lion opened The People’s Tap in January 2023 along the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail and Reedy River. The taproom serves a variety of craft beers, wines, ciders and seltzers. The People’s Tap has shared its space at 250 Riverplace with Local Honey Coffee Co. in the mornings since November 2024.
“When we opened The People’s Tap, we never expected how incredible the experience of building a community would be,” the post said. “What happened here became so much more than a business. We have loved getting to know you, celebrating with you and creating a place where people could come together.”
Emily Bersche, co-founder of Local Honey Coffee Co., said the closing of The People’s Tap will not impact the coffee shop’s operations. Local Honey Coffee Co. will remain open in the same location, operating from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. seven days a week.
