Fountain Inn’s longtime economic development director, Van Broad, has been named the City of Mauldin’s new community development director. Broad said Thursday that he learned about the new position Mauldin created and “threw my hat into the ring.”
Formerly a music and youth minister with First Baptist Church in Fountain Inn, Broad is a 20-year resident of Fountain Inn and has served as its economic development director for eight years.
When he arrived in Fountain Inn, more than 60 percent of the downtown buildings were vacant and the city didn’t have an economic development department or arts center, said Broad. With the support of volunteers and multiple collaborators, downtown now has 98 percent occupancy and a bustling Younts Center for the Performing Arts.
Broad wraps up his tenure with Fountain Inn on Nov. 27 and will transition to his new role over the next few weeks, he said. The work in Fountain Inn was “a privilege and a lot of fun,” he said. “Hopefully I will be able to take the experience and breadth of work to Mauldin,” he added.
