A New Jersey-based pet care concept is ready to “let the dogs out” in Spartanburg County.
K9 Resorts Daycare & Luxury Hotel announced Wednesday it hopes to sign at least one franchisee to open as many as two stores in the county during the next few years.
Jason Parker, who co-founded K9 Resorts with his brother, Steven Parker, in 2005, said certain indicators in the local market encourage the company, including the number of pet owners and demographics.
“We are really excited about Spartanburg,” Jason Parker said. “This business really brings out the entrepreneurial spirit in us. It combines our passion for dogs and for entrepreneurism. We know that maybe there are some folks out there who want more fulfillment and that’s why we decided to franchise our business.”
Parker said the company has grown to 10 locations in three states — including New Jersey, Pennsylvania and North Carolina — since it began franchising in 2011.
He said the company’s facilities are typically 7,000 square feet, located in strip centers or other industrial-type buildings with good visibility. He said the concept includes outdoor space, which isn’t generally a good fit in downtown areas.
Each new K9 Resorts facility usually creates about a dozen jobs, Parker said.
He said franchisee candidates should have about $300,000 in liquid capital. Startup costs range from $850,000 to more than $1 million. Parker said franchisees usually put 30 percent of that down and the company offers financing for the rest through its banking partners.
“Spartanburg is a nice place,” he said. “We think this business will do well there.”
K9 Resorts grew out of an in-home pet care concept the Parker brothers started when they were teenagers.
Jason Parker currently serves as president and Steven Parker as CEO.
The company offers a discount to U.S. military members and first responders.
