Airport director Darwin Simpson said the runway expansions would complete the final two phases of the project.

“We have a lot of businesspeople wanting direct access to the city of Spartanburg, and the runway extension will allow a larger of volume of traffic and larger jets,” he said.

Construction bids on the final two phases were due Aug. 21.
