Rudolph Logistics Group announces Caliber North facility

Rudolph Logistics Group will take up residence in Liberty Property Trust's speculative building at 2988 Green Road in Spartanburg County.

Spartanburg County’s automotive sector has attracted another international logistics provider.

Germany-based Rudolph Logistics Group announced Monday it plans to invest $18 million to establish its first U.S. warehousing operation in a 171,600-square-foot speculative, or “spec,” building at Caliber North Business Park near Greer.

The company said it anticipates 150 jobs will be created as a result of its move into the facility at 2988 Green Road less than 1 mile from BMW Manufacturing Co.

“Spartanburg County is one of the most dynamic business locations in the U.S.,” said Torsten Rudolph, managing partner of Rudolph Logistics Group, in a statement. “Starting here offers great opportunities for us and the customers we serve. They can now benefit from our long-term experience as a specialist in all logistical tasks related to the automotive sector with this new location in a key manufacturing region.”

Founded in 1946, Rudolph Logistics Group has 4,500 employees at 40 locations worldwide, according to the company’s website.

The Upstate Business Journal announced in June the company had leased the building owned by Liberty Property Trust, adjacent to Liberty’s Caliber Ridge Business Park.

A broker with the firm that represented Liberty Property Trust in the deal said Monday she was not able to provide details about the transaction.

Liberty released a statement in May that said Caliber Ridge had reached 100 percent occupancy.

The company said the new building is LEED certified and is “the first in the market to offer 36-foot clear heights and 54-by-50-foot column spacing, providing a tremendous advantage to tenants.”

“A higher roofline and wider aisles gives tenants more flexibility by increasing cubic volume and racking efficiency,” said Massie Flippin, vice president and market officer for Liberty in the Mid-Atlantic, in a statement. “For comparison, in a similar size warehouse with 32-foot clear heights and 50-by-50-foot column spacing, you can store about 6,200 pallets of product. At Caliber North, you could store more than 8,000 pallets. It is tremendously cost efficient for our customers.”

Liberty also touted the facility’s proximity to Highway 101, Interstate 85, the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, and the S.C. Ports Authority’s inland port near Greer.

The company said its development team included MCA Architecture, blueWater Design, and Harper Construction. It said it plans to develop a second, 94,500-square-foot building to complete the park.

Liberty Property Trust said in May it plans to develop a second 94,500-square-foot building beside Rudolph Logistic’s Group’s facility.

“We are very pleased to welcome Rudolph Logistics Group to Spartanburg County,” said Carter Smith, executive vice president of the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce’s Economic Futures Group. “That area offers proximity to I-85, the inland port, and the airport. We think they will have tremendous success.”

Rudolph Logistics Group said it “develops and provides comprehensive solutions for a wide range of industries,” with a “emphasis on the automotive and transportation sectors.”

The company said it will begin hiring for new positions in October.

They wanted to come here because it opens up great opportunity for them… It’s another statement to the world that [Spartanburg] county is the best place to live, work, and play. We have the best transportation system in the country. The inland port is the cherry on top. If you’re looking to do logistics, then Spartanburg is the place for you.”
