One of Spartanburg County’s top business leaders has received national recognition.

The Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce announced Monday, July 10, that its president and CEO Allen Smith was named to the board of directors for the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE).

Smith will officially begin his one-year term at the ACCE’s annual convention, which will be held July 16-19 in Nashville, Tenn.

“This appointment affirms the work of so many people in this community,” Smith said. “I am incredibly humbled and look forward to learning from chamber professionals from all over world as we work to build on Spartanburg’s momentum.”

Founded in 1914, ACCE offers professional development opportunities, and best practices through its publications, online education, conferences, and networking. Its mission is to support and develop chamber professionals across the country.

Smith has served as the chief executive of the Spartanburg Chamber since June 2014.

Under his leadership, the Spartanburg chamber has pushed forward several initiatives and strategic endeavors, including the $5.1 million community and economic development strategy OneSpartanburg.

The Spartanburg Chamber said since Smith’s arrival, it has increased its annual budget by 50 percent and its membership by 25 percent.

Smith previously served as president and CEO of the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce from 2010 to 2014. The Greer Chamber was named the 2012 Carolinas Chamber of the Year.

Smith also served as the senior vice president of the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce in North Carolina.

A graduate of East Carolina University, Smith serves on a variety of local academic, cultural, economic, medical, and development boards. Those groups include Converse College’s board of trustees, the Spartanburg Academic Movement’s board, the Northside Redevelopment Group’s board of advisors, Pelham Medical Center’s advisory council, and the Chapman Cultural Center’s board.

Smith is a Furman University Riley Diversity Leadership Fellow.

He earned the ACCE’s Certified Chamber Executive certification in 2012. The Spartanburg Chamber said the CCE is the only national designation for chamber of commerce professionals.

Smith is a graduate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute of Organization Management.
