Here’s a recap of January’s Board of Zoning Appeals:
Approved: Car rental on Duvall Drive
An application from Silvercar was approved to establish automobile rental use at 200 Duvall Drive, currently occupied by Audi Greenville. Silvercar wishes to use the existing main building and parking lot for car rental purposes. No alterations to the building or site are proposed.
The rental business will be run as an accessory to the automobile dealership with Audi Greenville staff assisting rental customers.
Denied: Short-term rentals in the West End Cottages
The board denied two applications for a Special Exception Permit for a hotel/motel, also referred to as a short-term rental. The applicants William Adam Taylor and Hunter Moss were represented by Randy Hiller.
The properties, located on 20 Howe St., are part of a 13-unit residential townhouse development called West End Cottages. The city found the proposed use “will have substantial adverse impacts on surrounding lands” and is “not compatible with surrounding lands” as it exists within various commercial zoning districts.
After discussing multiple factors, such as public comments supporting the approval of the Special Exception Permit and that only three permanent tenants are believed live in the neighborhood, the board denied both applications.
Approved: Alcohol sales at Harry’s Hoagie Shoppe
The board approved Andrew Fallis, the applicant for Harry’s Hoagie Shoppe located at 1700 E. North St., to serve alcoholic beverages by granting the business a Special Exception Permit, which is needed within C-1 districts. Although the business has been open since July 2022, Fallis says the application to serve alcohol comes after customer feedback and will only serve beer and wine.
City staff recommended approval due to being consistent with the GVL 2040 Comprehensive Plan and other zoning factors.
