Merrill Gardens, a senior living community on a 2.25-acre plot on South Academy Street between North Markley and Wardlaw streets in downtown Greenville’s West End, is set to open its doors in summer 2023.
The 62-and-older community will have amenities and activities designed specifically with seniors in mind, according to Amanda Warren, vice president of marketing with Merrill Gardens.
Facing Academy Street just a short walk to Unity Park, the six-story, 16,000-square-foot complex will have 167 units available, along with 69 at-grade parking spaces. The development is owned by Pillar Properties in partnership with Second 50 Communities, which purchased the property for $5.5 million in 2018.
The location is one of the top draws for the complex, as the community is close to downtown and is within walking distance of a number of attractions — from the aforementioned Unity Park, home to The Commons, Southernside Brewery and a popular stretch of the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail, to downtown’s Main Street.
It will offer studio, one- and two-bedroom units, weekly housekeeping, pool, 24-hour staffing, transportation options and more.
The units will be month-to-month rentals with no option to buy, and Merrill Gardens has yet to decide on the monthly rent prices.
The Greenville-based architectural firm Urbal Architecture will work on the design, and another Greenville-based company, Site Design, will design the landscaping.
Merrill Gardens will also offer anytime dining, which allows residents to drop by the dining hall at their convenience during the day. Entertainment options will include a bistro and wine bar, library, movie theater, and fitness area. The site will also be home to a spa, courtyard, massage room, rooftop deck, 24-hour staffing, linen services, a wellness program and more. Pets are welcome.
The development will have an active-living coordinator on staff that will be responsible for planning activities for residents.
