Like many in the newspaper business, Chris Haire didn’t set out to become a journalist. While a student at Clemson, he thought he would enter the world of advertising. Of course, that was before he decided to become a lawyer. Which was a year or so before he changed his mind to become a full-time academic. But a somewhere along the way, Chris became a columnist for the now-defunct Edge Magazine in Greenville, and he was instantly hooked. Eventually, he landed at GSA Business before jumping ship to edit Creative Loafing Greenville, later MetroBeat. Following a brief period as a freelancer in Boston, he moved to Honolulu, where he served as editor of the Honolulu Weekly. In 2007, he got lonely for life in South Carolina, but mostly he just missed Clemson football, brunch, and the rough-and-tumble world of Palmetto State politics. For the past nine years, Chris has overseen the Charleston City Paper, one of the nation’s premier alt-weeklies. Today, he’s back home in his beloved Greenville. His preferred Bloody Mary mix is Zing Zang, he occasionally makes his own kimchi, and he believes Jaws is the best movie ever made.
