Young professionals in Spartanburg gift more than $15,000 to Upstate Warrior Solution

United Way of the Piedmont Young Leaders Society's chairman Martin Huff, left, shakes hands with John Fix, Spartanburg director of Upstate Warrior Solution.

A group of young leaders in Spartanburg on Friday gifted more than $15,000 to help local veterans and their families in need.

Spartanburg Young Professionals (SYP) and the United Way of the Piedmont Young Leaders raised the funds during their second annual 1831 Gala in January held at the Piedmont Club in support of Upstate Warrior Solution’s Spartanburg chapter.

Members of the groups presented leaders of the nonprofit, which serves about 450 veterans in Spartanburg and 1,200 across the Upstate, with a large check for $15,050.01 during a ceremony in downtown.

The donation was a more than 50 percent increase compared with the $10,000 raised during the inaugural event in 2016.

Martin Huff, co-chairman of the 1831 Gala and chairman of the United Way of the Piedmont Young Leaders, said the 250-person event has sold out during each of the past two years.

“We wanted to promote local organizations in the community,” Huff said. “This is a neat event that brings young leaders together. We wanted it to be fun and kind of cool. We’re very happy to be able to present this gift on behalf of everyone who contributed to an organization that is doing great things for our veterans.”

John Fix, Spartanburg director for Upstate Warrior Solution, said the donation will be used to provide housing and employment opportunities to active duty, reserves, national guard, and retired veterans and their families.

The organization also plans to launch a veteran court program similar to drug courts, which divert individuals with criminal records away from incarceration.

“Too often millennials don’t get the credit they deserve,” Fix said. “This group went above and beyond. We thing it’s fantastic that they want to support our nation’s heroes.”

The young professional organizations said they plan to hold the third 1831 Gala, which is named for the year Spartanburg was incorporated, in January 2018.

Upstate Warrior Solution’s Spartanburg office is located in renovated Evans Building that houses Spartanburg Community College’s downtown campus at 220 E. Kennedy St.
