Spartanburg-based Denny’s Corp. announced Tuesday its customers helped it score a grand slam in the fight against childhood hunger in America.
The family-dining chain said it raised $1 million in 2016 for the Washington D.C.-based nonprofit Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign.
Denny’s chief executive John Miller and Paul Spencer, director of corporate social responsibility, presented a check to Diana Hovey, managing director for Dine Out for No Kid Hungry, during a ceremony at the company’s headquarters in downtown.
Miller said it was the largest annual donation the company has ever made to the campaign.
“Through the incredible support of Denny’s guests and the unwavering dedication of our team members and franchisees, we are proud to donate $1 million to No Kid Hungry and help connect children in need with access to healthy, consistent meals,” Miller said, in a statement.
Hovey said every dollar raised for the campaign supports up to 10 meals for children who “might not know where their next meal is coming from.”
Denny’s said it has supported No Kid Hungry for six years and raised more than $4.3 million, which translates to more than 43 million meals.
The company’s 2016 fundraiser ran from September through mid-December and was supported by more than 1,500 Denny’s restaurants across the country.
Diners were given a discount coupon in exchange for each donation. The company also donated $1 each time a guest shared a food photo on Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #ShareMySlam.
“Every dollar raised through Dine Out for No Kid Hungry helps to make a significant impact in the fight to end childhood hunger,” Miller said. “We are grateful for the generosity of those who participated in this year’s record-breaking effort for Denny’s.”
