Designed to attract additional business traffic and accommodate larger jets, Spartanburg’s Downtown Memorial Airport is undergoing a $20 million revitalization project.
As part of the four-phased project, a 700-foot extension of the runway and a 1,000-foot extension of the runway’s safety area are planned following the acquisition of three residential properties.
From start to finish and including the new terminal building, the project is five years in the making, with the Federal Aviation Commission providing the bulk of the funding.
Airport director Darwin Simpson said the runway expansions would complete the final two phases of the project.
“We have a lot of businesspeople wanting direct access to the city of Spartanburg, and the runway extension will allow a larger of volume of traffic and larger jets,” he said.
Construction bids on the final two phases were due Aug. 21.
