Here’s a recap of the Aug. 11 meeting of the city of Greenville’s Board of Zoning Appeals:
Approved: Tattoo Parlor on Pendleton Street
A new tattoo parlor may be soon coming to the Village of West Greenville.
The Board of Zoning Appeals approved a request for a special exception to allow for a tattoo parlor at 1290 Pendleton St., which would overtake the empty lot currently situated between Revival Butchery and Dwell Chic Interiors.
The approval of the request is the latest example of the city is reconsidering the merits of businesses formerly deemed “nuisances” to public wellness. Although the zoning for the Village of West Greenville is classified as a redevelopment district and prohibits tattoo establishments to be built in the area, the board approved the special exemption which argued, “Tattoo as an art form is consistent with the values of the [Village of West Greenville]… The area has been identified as a creative, artistic hub. The proposal would allow for a more inclusive representation of the kind of art that Greenville residents currently appreciate.”

The application comes from Village Revival LLC, and was approved for a tattoo parlor only, as the application stated the tenant would not incorporate body piercing. This would be the Village’s first tattoo establishment after specific standards were approved by City Council to allow body piercing or tattoo establishments if they do not fall adjacent to single-family detached residences.
