By now, you’re probably well-aware of the Great Resignation, impacting a significant portion of our workforce in a post-pandemic world. As the young professional (“YoPro”) expert, I’m here to break down the 21-39 year olds at your businesses who might be leaving and how you can engage and retain them while seeing your business succeed.
YoPro turnover costs American companies $30.5 billion a year, according to Gallup’s article on Millennials: The Job-Hopping Generation. An even harder pill to swallow? It takes 33% of a worker’s annual salary to replace just one employee, according to Employee Benefit News.
With the growing number of young professionals in the workplace, we make up the majority of the company’s bottom line. That means that it’s important to keep us. Losing young professionals loses money. With changing workplaces and new trends dropping left and right, it’s hard to keep YoPros happy and engaged. The fix? Invest in your YoPros by creating an environment geared toward their success. Add that to these five tips and you will save your organization time, hundreds of thousands of dollars over time, and quite frankly, sanity.
- Establish a young professional onboarding program
- Offer semi-annual check-ins
- Offer ongoing training
- Have clear communication
- Make sure there is room to grow
This matters because when YoPros feel valued and supported by their employer, they stay longer and contribute more, which has a lasting impact on an organization’s cultural and financial success.
