Commercial electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Proterra is opening a 327,000-square-foot battery systems manufacturing site in Greer’s Carolina Commerce Center, the company announced Dec. 14.
With an initial investment of $76 million, the company will eventually bring more than 200 jobs, according to Proterra’s release. The battery systems factory will launch in the back half of 2022 and, by 2025, will have expanded to support the production of other systems needed for the company’s medium- and heavy duty EV and equipment.
The facility is strategically located adjacent to Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport and is near Proterra’s bus manufacturing facility in Greenville, allowing the company to bring its battery production process closer to many of its customers.
“With our company’s history in South Carolina and the Upstate region, we are excited to build on our strong partnership with the state of South Carolina, Spartanburg County, and the City of Greer and bring EV battery system manufacturing to the region,” said Gareth Joyce, president of Proterra.
Made entirely in the U.S., Proterra’s battery systems have been proven through more than 20 million service miles driven by its transit customers and selected by world-class commercial vehicle manufacturers to electrify delivery vehicles, work trucks, construction and mining equipment, school buses, coach buses, and more.
The Greer expansion represents the company’s third battery production facility in the nation. In December 2020, the company opened its second battery production site co-located in its EV bus manufacturing facility in Los Angeles County.
