Progress on the redevelopment of Greenville County Square, located at the corner of University Ridge and South Church Street near downtown Greenville, continues to go as planned, with county employees expected to enter the offices in the first quarter of 2023, according to County Administrator Joe Kernell.
“Everything is coming together very nicely,” Kernell said.
County employees are currently housed in the old facilities at University Ridge, but all state agencies relocated to offices at 350 and 352 Halton Road. That includes the Department of Social Services (DSS), Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ), Department of Health and Environmental (DHEC), and Family Court.
University Ridge redevelopment at a glance
- $1 billion total investment
- $78 million county administration building
- 40 acres of development, including five acres of administrative buildings
- 3.5 million square feet total
- 250,000 square feet of retail, dining and entertainment space
- $24 million parking deck
- Structural steel frame and glass curtainwall construction
- Five-story North and South office towers interconnected by a common terrace level, a courtyard, a bridge, and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PFTE) exterior structural canopy
- Expected to bring 5,500 jobs
The 250,000-square-foot county administrative building, approved by City Council in 2020, represents the largest redevelopment in Greenville County history.
The redevelopment of the Greenville County administrative building aims to complement downtown, with Kernell calling the site an “extension of downtown Greenville,” especially with the last phase of the project focusing on the county plaza.
Once construction is completed on phases 1A and 1B, which focus on the administrative building and parking deck, work will begin on the event plaza, veteran’s memorial wall and green space.
