Merle Johnson, director of economic and community development for the city of Greenville since 2020, has accepted a position as the executive director of Orangeburg County Development Commission.
Johnson has more than 15 years of economic development experience, and he helped drive efforts for companies and individuals looking to relocate to Greenville. He was credited for helping to bring Kiyatec’s bio-tech headquarters and Southern First Bank and United Community Bank headquarters to the city.
“My time in Greenville and working with everyone at the city has been one that I will always cherish,” Johnson said on his LinkedIn page.
Johnson will assume his new role with Orangeburg County on Jan. 17, 2023. When he takes over at his new position, he will be responsible for leadership and recruiting new companies to come to Orangeburg County, as well as working with industry to plan incentive packages.
He’s only the fifth person to hold the executive director title in Orangeburg County since its founding in 1958.
“Merle is a natural selection for this role and this community and we are excited for the new opportunities ahead,” said Johnnie Wright Sr., County of Orangeburg Council Chairman. “It is indeed a great day in Orangeburg County.”
Leaders with the city of Greenville have not yet publicly commented on Johnson’s departure.
