BMW supplier Tower International has announced it will invest $75 million to establish its first South Carolina plant in Greenville County and create 140 jobs.
The facility will be at Southchase Business Park in Fountain Inn.
It will manufacture large, complex assemblies for “a leading automobile manufacturer,” the company said Tuesday.
A company official could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.
Tower International, headquartered in Livonia, Mich., is a global manufacturer of metal components and assemblies, with annual revenues of $2 billion, the company said.
According to the company’s website it has 27 plants in North America, South America, Europe and China that are near its customers, which include “the world’s largest automotive manufacturers.”
Tower International said it has 7,000 associates at its plants in North America and Europe.
“Tower International’s expansion in South Carolina is an important part of the expected future growth of our North American operations,” said Jim Bernard, president of Tower Americas, in a statement. “We are most appreciative of the support we have received from the Greenville Area Department Corporation, Greenville County and the State of South Carolina as we establish our first facility in the Palmetto State.”
The company said it anticipates the facility will begin production in September 2017. Tower International said it will hire for the facility throughout 2017.
“Tower International adds to the automotive competitiveness of the Greenville landscape and we are proud to welcome them to the community,” said Bob Taylor, chairman of Greenville County Council, in a statement. “Greenville County wishes them much success and continued growth.”
The state’s Coordinating Council for Economic Development has approved job development credits for the project, according to the S.C. Department of Commerce.
Greenville County was awarded a $100,000 set-aside grant to assist with the cost of building upgrades and renovations.
Tower International said jobseekers should visit the careers page on its website.
