A new shopping center could bring restaurants and retail shops to the Duncan and Moore communities in Spartanburg County.
The 15,000-square-foot Tyger River Plaza will be constructed on a 3-acre tract at 5844 Reidville Road.
It will be situated beside the Publix grocery store at Poplar Springs Plaza near the intersection of Reidville Road and Highway 290.
The property’s owner and primary investor in the shopping center, who asked not to be identified, said he expects the center will be completed by September 2017.
Spartanburg County’s planning commission granted conditional approval for the project on Tuesday.
A site plan showed the property could accommodate a 10,000-square-foot addition in the future.
“In the first phase, there are two end spaces with drive-thru capabilities, which are ideal for restaurants,” said Andrew Babb, a broker with NAI Earle Furman, who is helping to lease the spaces to tenants. “There is also room for other businesses that we think would be assets to the surrounding community.”
The owner said no leases have been signed yet, but he hopes to make an announcement early next year.
During the past two years, the Highway 290 corridor between Interstate 85 and Highway 221 has exploded with industrial, commercial and residential growth.
Companies including Toray, Kobelco, Ritrama, and Sterling CPI have decided to build new facilities off Reidville Road.
Developers are optimistic that more large companies will follow suit in the near future, particularly on the 882-acre northern tract of Pacolet Milliken Enterprises’ Tyger River Industrial Park.
The strip center will also be less than four miles from the county’s Tyger River Park, a popular destination for youth sports events and recreation.
