The bodega, cafe and juice bar specializing in made-to-order health food Snack Works, 612 South Main, is closing its doors on Dec. 24. Owner and chef Patrick Demarco made the announcement on social media.
“We have always considered ourselves to be an employee cafeteria to all the businesses close by and will miss the friendships,” Demarco said.
The closure was not related to a downturn in business, Demarco said. Despite making it through COVID-19 lockdowns and the ensuring disruption to the downtown office worker lunch crowd, Demarco claimed the cafe was having its best year ever in the nearly nine years it had been in business.
Instead, the closure comes as the building is set to undergo what Demarco called “major renovations” and he said the restaurant’s lease was not renewed.
“Though we are having the best year in our 8 1/2 years of existence, we feel that moving would take too much energy,” he said. “So we decided that we will close … It’s sad but also exciting at the same time. We really appreciate our unique clientele. We see most people daily so it’s like saying goodbye to friends. Thanks to everyone.”
Demarco spent a career in hospitality management in the Virgin Islands and opened the neighborhood cafe and bodega upon his return to Greenville.
There is no word yet on what will take over the location.
