Mountain House at Caesars Head announced its closure on July 2.
The roadside cafe made the announcement by social media, citing factors beyond their control as the reason for closing.
Located less than a half-mile from Caesars Head State Park in northern Greenville County, the current restaurant was open for approximately 18 months. The stone cottage home at 8101 Geer Hwy. has stood for more than a century.
Owner James Akers Jr. said that closure came down to profitability. The stone cottage required costly unforeseen repairs to the building. The customer base was heavily reliant on both weather and tourism, making planning for both inventory and staffing difficult.
“I will miss the people,” Akers said. “We have made amazing, lifelong friendships with residents of the two mountain communities as well as the state park staff. The feel of the mountain is relaxing, almost Hallmark movie-ish.”
The eatery was known for its coffee, specialty waffles and sandwiches along with a curated aesthetic complementing its 3,208 foot elevation.
There is no immediate word as to what may become of the building.
Akers has been a real estate broker for over 20 years and will focus on growing his brokerage, Akers and Associates, which opened in June 2023.
