The vegan bakery Basta will close permanently on Sept. 23.
Located at 1256 Pendleton St. in the Village of West Greenville, the bakery (whose name is stylized as “basta.”) has been operating as a brick and mortar since 2022. The business began in October 2020 as a home-only operation, with owner Alexis Krcelic serving up vegan banana bread to the community.
Soon her selection of vegan pastries, cakes, cookies and other desserts evolved into an eclectic mix of options, all avoiding animal products like butter and dairy.
From selling at farmers markets to creating a constantly rotating selection of hand-made vegan desserts at her brick and mortar spot, Krcelic said the decision to close came after the realities of running the business no longer aligned with what she wanted out of life.
“I started basta. when I was single, had a dog, and a full time job,” she wrote on social media. “It was so easy to give everything to it and I’m so grateful for that. … While it still gives me purpose, my life looks so different today. I have a beautiful fiancee, two dogs, a house to take care of, and truly no real income coming in. And as much as it shocks me that I would be remotely domestic, I love my little family. I want to spend time with them.”
