Plans for a major mixed use development as part of the Greenville Gateway initiative were among several applications to receive initial approval from the city’s Design Review Board Urban Panel at its July 7 meeting.
The panel unanimously approved plans for the project on the old site of the Greenville Memorial Auditorium that will include:
- 300 apartments.
- 6,600 square feet of commercial space.
- 6,700 square feet of restaurant/amenities space.
- 335 on-site parking spaces.

The project is being developed by Miami-based NR Investments with design being led by Greenville’s Johnston Design Group. The panel’s approval was limited to the project’s scale and material concepts at this early stage of project design. Project organizers are planning to provide more detailed plans to the panel at a later date.
In other action, the Urban Panel gave initial approval to the following projects:
-
- Facade improvements to 18 N. Main St., where acclaimed chef and Greenville native Joe Cash plans to open a new restaurant, Scoundrel, in the space formerly occupied by Handi Indian Cuisine.
- Facade renovation to 22 E. Court St., where Table 301 restaurant group founder Carl Sobocinski is planning a new restaurant, The Jones Oyster Co., in the space formerly occupied by Soby’s On the Side. The new restaurant name and design elements pay homage to the old Jones Furniture Co., which occupied the building in decades past.
- Facade renovation and installation of a balcony at 612 S. Main St., the location of the former Snack Works. The historic two-story building contains a private residence on the second floor, and plans call for a restaurant to occupy the ground floor. The approval was conditioned on the applicant resolving further design details with city staff and two members of the board.
