A new development proposed for downtown Greenville’s West End is on track to go up across the street from Fluor Field.
Markley + Main is a multi-family development consisting of five stories of residences and one ground floor of retail wrapping around a seven-story parking garage, along with a separate five-story building with residences and ground-level stoops. The entire development will be set back on a 3.1-acre site along Markley Street, bordered by Vardry Street, Green Avenue and Main Street.
Developed by Charlotte-based SunCap Property Group, portions of the project will sit on 2.7 acres of land belonging to Allen Temple AME Church, which is currently used as the church’s recreation center.
SunCap Senior Vice President David Lee said the goal of the project is to ensure it felt cohesive with the neighborhood.
“We want to make this project feel as seamless and thoughtful as possible,” Lee said.
Aspects of that seamlessness include the parking garage, which will be hidden behind perforated metal mesh panels featuring a custom art mural celebrating the history of the West End.
The plans for the project have already met with approval from the City’s Design Review Board, and members of the project team have held community meetings with local stakeholders, including the West End Neighborhood Association, Mayor White and other city officials, business owners, Rev. Speed of Allen Temple AME Church and other residents.
“We’re big proponents of placemaking and want to make sure this is being done with plenty of community input,” Lee said.
The project team includes McMillan Pazdan Smith (design architects), Cline Design Association (AOR) and Seamon Whiteside (landscape architecture and civil engineering).
