The modern Japanese restaurant O-Ku is now open at 40 W. Broad St., taking over a portion of the old Rick Erwin’s Nantucket Seafood location.
Led by Executive Chef Jose Aguilar, a veteran of O-Ku’s Atlanta location, the menu features traditional Japanese dishes with a focus on high-quality ingredients and elevated presentation and technique.
Expect menu items like nigiri, sashimi, sushi rolls and entrees, with a beverage program focused on a wide selection of Japanese whiskey and sake, craft cocktails, imported and local beers, and wine.
But the restaurant is also unique in its flexibility; guests can opt for a changing tasting menu experience depending on the chef’s whims, as well as different recommendations depending upon the ingredients on offer.

The interior of the space, designed by Charleston-based architect David Thompson, leans heavily on a rustic style featuring shou sugi ban or “charred wood” walls, high ceilings, tree branches and other wood accents.
Guests in the 130-seat dining room might feel as though they’re stepping inside a Japanese forest outpost. The restaurant also features a patio that can seat up to 80 guests, adjacent to the Village Green.
